NYRSTAR says it might have to delay maintenance work on its Port Pirie smelter, because of wet weather in South Australia.
The smelter operator had earlier shut down the slag fuming plant for a 21-day maintenance program and says it will reopen in early June.
According to the company, although the 21-day deadline is possible, the rain could pose risks for the 170 maintenance contractors working on the program.
The extra water and moisture could render surfaces slippery, and affect the electrical equipment in the smelter. The company has also cited the logistic difficulties of coordinating the activities of 170 workers to ensure an efficient and safe operation.
