Refinery maintenance and expansion to boost production

BHP Billiton has invested US$1.9b into an efficiency and growth expansion project for Western Australia’s Worsley alumina refinery.

The expansion project is expected to lift the refinery’s capacity from 3.5m tonnes per annum to 4.6m tonnes per annum of alumina production. It will expand mining operations, add more refinery capacity, and upgrade port facilities.

Construction has already started and first production is expected in the first half of 2011.

Worsley Alumina is a joint venture partnership between BHP, Japan Alumina Associates Australia and Sojitz Alumina.
