THE NZ$9.5m ($7.5m) water treatment plant near Wanaka airport in New Zealand is the subject of an ongoing dispute between the local district council and contractors United Group.

According to the Otago Daily Times, the Queenstown Lakes District Council is declining to sign off a defect liability certificate for the Project Pure plant. It is concerned over noise, operational reliability, odour, septic tank waste processing capabilities and staff work space.

The problems started in January 2009 when the plant malfunctioned, three months after it was commissioned. According to the council, it identified three equipment faults but only one has been adequately addressed.

According to United Group, the plant has been operating well for two months, and laboratory tests showed the treated effluent was within compliance guidelines.
