Dragline maintenance engineer wins Women in Industry award

AN ENGINEER who managed a dragline maintenance shutdown for the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) has won 2008’s Queensland government Smart Women Smart State Awards.

Melanie Gordan, who is a Project Manager at BMA’s Goonyella Riverside Mine, took the Engineering-Women in Industry/Business section of the awards.

She had previously received the Queensland Resources Council Resources Award for Women in March 2008.

According to the maintenance manager, friends were betting on how long she would last in the mining world. No one expected her to still be in the industry six years later. She claims to love the challenge, variety, job satisfaction and recognition.
