Summit Matsu on environmental concerns for refrigeration systems

SUMMIT Matsu Chilling Systems says industrial refrigeration systems can play a key role in reducing energy consumption.

According to Summit Matsu Chilling Systems, while it is keeping pace with industry-wide developments such as variable speed refrigeration compressors and eco-friendly refrigerants, it is also focusing on increased chiller life as an eco-friendly approach.

Summit Matsu Chilling Systems claims some of its competitors use thinner grades of aluminium for condenser fins, or not epoxy coating the fins, or using thinner grades of steel for cabinets.

The company says these compromises result in shorter product life, which in turn causes a greater environmental impact and heightens the total cost of chiller ownership.

When making the purchasing decision, Summit Matsu recommends looking for a number of features to ensure the chiller unit is as environmentally sound as possible.

These include the use of chlorine-free refrigerants. 407C and 134a refrigerants, for example, do not deplete the ozone layer, and have a safety rating, with lower toxicity and no flame propagation.

“Screw” type refrigeration compressors are the most efficient class in terms of power consumption. Variable drive refrigeration compressors conserve power by reducing capacity when only a small amount of chiller capacity is required.

If the chillers are to be used outdoors, use high quality steel frames. A chiller bought once will have a lower environmental impact than one that needs to be replaced. Additionally, finned heat exchangers should use high quality aluminium.

Quality grade aluminium results in 12 fins per inch, but some manufacturers use a thinner grade of aluminium and up to 18 fins per inch to save on space but these have a limited life.

Epoxy coating on condenser fins also leads to less fin corrosion and longer condenser fin life.
