SIEMENS says it has developed a variety of energy autarkic radio sensors which draw energy from their surroundings, them to automatically monitor facilities in remote areas.
According to Siemens, the sensors require no wiring, and once installed, will work maintenance-free for many years. They draw their energy from the environment in the form of light or vibrations, then transmit measured data by radio.
Siemens claims the energy autarkic radio sensors are suited for taking measurements at locations where the use of sensors had previously been considered too complex, such as on poorly accessible or moving parts.
By using the technology, industrial plants can be monitored more closely, revealing wear sooner and making it possible to avoid costly plant outages. Maintenance can also be performed as required, rather than at scheduled intervals.
Siemens says some of the sensors are equipped with solar cells, while in others, a piezoelectric components absorbs vibrational energy or a thermocouple converts temperature differences into energy, depending on the application.
