Industrial UV disinfection allows irrigation with effluent

UV light is known to kill microbes and is widely accepted as a way of disinfecting industrial wastewater from factories before its reuse or release into the environment.CST Wastewater Solutions has supplied Goulburn with ultraviolet (UV) disinfection equipment to process effluent for use in irrigation.

The Goulburn Mulwaree Council decided to conserve potable water by reusing treated effluent for agriculture irrigation. The project was contracted out to Ted Wilson & Sons, which used a pressured on-demand irrigation scheme designed to simplify the infrastructure and lower costs.

According to CST, its Berson InLine medium pressure lamp technology was used to treat the effluent, resulting in a high water discharge quality which eliminated the need for further civil works. Its technology has been fully integrated into the council’s PC/SCADA process control system.

UV light is known to kill microbes and is widely accepted as a way of disinfecting industrial wastewater from factories before its reuse or release into the environment. Medium pressure UV is polychromatic with a variety of wavelengths, preventing photo-reactivation of the microbes.

The council says it was already using effluent for irrigation before the system was installed, but the UV-treated effluent could be used for more purposes.

CST Wastewater Solutions provides a range of wastewater treatment services and technologies such as water and wastewater screening, grit removal, dewatering, and sludge dewatering.
