Two five MV .A transformers will be replaced with two 15 MV.A units, tripling the electrical capacity of the substation.
According to Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson, the substation was upgraded because of industrial growth in the local area. Quarries, fan-cooled chicken sheds and meat works have increased the electricity requirements.
Most of the works will occur within the substation site, but some excavation and heavy vehicle movement will be needed.
All work is expected to be completed by February.
The project is part of a record $4 billion-plus, five-year capital expenditure program by Energex.
