Power overwhelming

Over 24 months, ABB will supply solutions and implement Pilbara Iron’s High Voltage infrastructure, including a number of turn-key substation projects from design to commissioning, service and consultancy.ABB has been awarded a five year Framework Agreement by Rio Tinto’sPilbara Iron mines to help with the miner’s power system upgrade project.
The agreement is estimated to be worth more the $150m for the transmission infrastructure work alone, and ABB claims its solutions will provide Rio Tinto with a stable and reliable supply of energy across its network of mines in the Pilbara region.
The Power System Upgrade project aims to increase generation, transmission and distribution capacity of power to the various mine expansion projects. It is driven by the increased global demand for iron ore and the need to meet increased production targets.
