Clean TeQ installs VOC-destroying technology at steel mill
CLEAN TeQ has reduced the emissions from a steel mill in Queensland, by installing a Regenerative Thermal Oxidiser (RTO).
The steel mill had been under pressure to reduce its Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions, which are produced as part of the spray coating processes in the facility.
Steel tubes and hollow sections are sprayed with primer or protective coatings after being rolled, and the solvent from the paint evaporates and is emitted into the atmosphere.
This emission is captured and transported via duct under negative pressure to the treatment system, where RTO technology was applied to the fumes. This technology is under license from Adwest Technologies.
The solvent-laden air passed through a ceramic bed where it is heated to its oxidation temperature. It then passes to the combustion chamber, where the VOCs are destroyed by burning (oxidisation).
The treated air is then passed through a second random ceramic bed to get rid of 95% of the heat before being discharged to atmosphere. Valves prevent the air from flowing backwards.
