Alcoa’s planned expansion cancellation destroys potential jobs

THE
AUSTRALIAN Workers Union claims the global financial crisis has compromised
Alcoa’s planned Wagerup refinery expansion, destroying potential jobs.
Almost 1500 maintenance and construction jobs would have been created during the upgrade and expansion, and 250 permanent operating jobs would have been available at the completed facility.
The volatile financial markets have forced Alcoa to shelve the $1.5b expansion, an indication, AWU claims, of the pressures facing the aluminium industry in Australia.
It has urged the Federal Government to ensure its policies do not have an adverse effect on the key industries.
