ABB to help Rio Tinto upgrade production rates

The installations will be online by the end of 2009, and will include power transformers, instrumentation transformers, disconnectors and high- and medium-voltage switchgear.ABB AUSTRALIA will be helping Rio Tinto increase the capacity at its iron-ore mining and production facilities, by installing electrification equipment in the Pilbara region.
The power projects are worth $48m. The turnkey, high-voltage substations will see the miner increase its annual production from 163m tonnes of iron ore to 220m tonnes so as to meet increased world demand.
Specifically, the company will provide a 220kV switching system at the Seven Mile power station and a 220/33kV bulk supply substation at Cape Lambert. These are the first of eight projects being considered by Rio Tinto under the power systems upgrade project in Pilbara.
The order includes all design, equipment, civil and electrical works, as well as project management. The installations will be online by the end of 2009, and will include power transformers, instrumentation transformers, disconnectors and high- and medium-voltage switchgear.
